Volos Overview |
Volos is a fast growing industrial centre and transportation hub in eastern Greece; it is the capital of the Thessaly prefecture. Situated at the base of Mt. Pelion on the Pagasitic Gulf, the town makes a good base to explore the offshore islands, the wooded slopes of the mountain and the lush green valleys that surround it.
The modern Volos was founded in the mid 19th century and following the 1922 population exchange where ethnic Greek refugees from Turkey settled in the town, the town became famous for the ouzeria that popped up all over town.
By day the town is a bustling port city with heavy traffic, by night the scene transforms into one of strolling couples and dozens of seafood cafes and restaurants spilling out of their buildings and onto the sidewalks with the sounds of pleasant local music filling the air |

Volos Essentials |
Enidrio – This is one of Volos’s most popular restaurants. It is situated right on the water and is perfect for a romantic night out. The speciality here is undoubtedly the seafood, which is excellent. The restaurant is open until 1am.
Archaeological Museum – This museum houses many relics from the past dating back to Roman times and before. The museum itself is housed in a beautiful neoclassical mansion. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30am to 3pm.
Art Centre of Giorio de Chirco – This fine gallery showcases some fine examples of Greek landscape painting as well as a collection of monotypes, lithographs and copper prints dating back to the Ottoman empire. The gallery is closed Mondays and is open from 10am to 1pm.
The Old Town – Also known as the castle of Volos or “Castro”, this is a walled part of town dating back to the 6th century. The castle itself served as a fort and defended the town from pirates – it was last attacked by the Venetian fleet in 1655. After the birth of modern Volos many of the old walls were demolished but a few still remain to be seen today.
Kitsos Makris Museum – Housed in Kitsos’s own home this museum features works by Theophilos and Christopoulos as well as Byzantine icons, woodcarvings and pottery. The museum is closed Saturdays and open from 8.30am to 2pm.
