Useful Tips |

| The public transport system of Thessaloniki is bad: overcrowded and unreliable buses are impolite, impersonel and only a few lines. Taxis are no good either... You can walk in down town Thessaloniki and cover most areas of interest on foot, but a car or bike gives you the freedom to explore at leisure. |
Thessaloniki Overview |
| A devastating fire in 1917 rendered nearly half of the population homeless, destroying most of the old houses in the tangled Ottoman lanes, and the entire Jewish quarter including all 32 synagogues. Rebuilding the city over the following eight years allowed Ernest Hebrard to plan a modern city of shady avenues, which has since taken on a cosmopolitan ambience with an international trade fair, major university and a renowned avant-garde music and entertainment scene. It is said that the women of Thessaloniki are the best dressed in Greece, but as in every city, there is a sub-culture of the un-employed and struggling European refugees. |

Thessaloniki Essentials |
White Tower – The city’s most recognisable landmark and most notorious, the tower was the scene of gruesome executions by specially selected Ottoman soldiers.
Byzantine Churches – Many of Thessaloniki’s ancient churches have been destroyed over the centuries by various catastrophes, but there remain a few that have been beautifully restored.
Hazma Bey Camil – In the late 16th century the Hazma Bey Camil was given a minaret and the status of a mosque, and is today the largest mosque in Greece.
Archaeological Museum – Erotic sculptures of Aphrodite, gold death masks, soldiers’ swords and helmets, are among the diverse displays in this museum.
Ataturk’s House – The birthplace and childhood home of the creator of the modern Turkish state is situated next to the Turkish consulate. |
