Thassos Island is known as the green island of Greece. It is famous for its beautiful beaches; Greek hospitality; excellent wines; and delicious honey.
The island's capitol, Thassos or Limenas, occupies the site of the ancient city, with many old historical sites and landmarks still all around town. It is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Aegean sea, this is the place to go for a summer holiday in Greece. |
| Thassos Essentials |
Thassos Archaeological Museum - This is the main museum in town and is well worth a visit when here for the first time. The museum has many exhibits that display the history of the island and its capital. In its garden you'll find many interesting statues.
Makryammos - This beautiful secluded beach is located just out of town, and is one of the most popular beaches on the island. You can relax in the sun; have some fun in the crystal clear waters; or have something to eat at one of the restaurants on the beachfront.
The Temple of Pythian Apollo - This is one of the main attractions of the island, and it has been standing at this site for many years. You can walk around the temple and be taken back to a time gone by.
Panagia and Potamia - These two traditional villages are the most beautiful places on the island and well worth the drive from Thassos Town. They over look the famous Golden Beach and Skala Potamias, which is the longest sandy bay of the island.
Archangel Michael's Convent - This amazing convent is located on top of a cliff on the edge of Aliki, on the southern part of the island. The convent has a breathtaking view of the sea and Archangel beach. |
| Thassos Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (15 August) - This is one of the most important events of the year in Thassos, and is held at Panayia. The assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated with one big party that lasts the whole day.
Fair of St. George (Easter) - This fair is held in Thassos Town on the third day after Easter every year. The highlight of the fair is when the town's people perform the rain dance in hope that the rain comes in April. |
