Useful Tips |
| Other - by Brent from Fraser Island |
| Renting a convertible or open-top 4x4 is by far the best way to cruise around the island and enjoy the Greek sunshine. Some of the Samos towns are over an hour’s drive apart and many roads are narrow and twisty (which makes the popular Mopeds a bad idea). Coastal roads are superbly scenic. The Army produce the most accurate and up-to-date map by far! |
Samos Overview |
| The long-reaching fingers of tourism discovered Samos during the 1980’s, and today the verdant island is increasingly surrendering its ancient secrets and isolation to the very lucrative trade. The rugged northwestern area of Samos is still undeveloped and retains its natural grandeur, while the south coast and eastern half of the island welcome visitors with all the necessary accoutrements to provide an idyllic holiday in the sun. |

Samos Essentials |
Efpalineio Orygma – Designed by engineer Eupalinos to provide water to ancient Samos, and built between 529 and 524 BC, this 1,040m aqueduct is an outstanding engineering feat.
Archaeological Museum – Further evidence of the creative spirit of humanity is the 5m tall statue of the ideal male (Kouros) surviving since 580 BC.
Moni Megalis Panagias – This monastery is the second oldest on Samos and was founded in 1586 by two hermits Nilos and Dionysios.
Kokkari – Although the beaches of Kokkari are stony and wind swept, they are a windsurfer’s paradise, and the waterside cafes of the quay provide a busy nightlife.
Mount Kerki – The second highest peak in the Aegean Sea, Mount Kerki has magnificent scenery, with jagged volcanic rocks and bottomless chasms.
