Useful Tips |
| Safety - by Victoria from Chillicothe, Missouri |
| This is the largest, busiest and most important port in Greece and driving around can be daunting at first, but once you are settled in and used to the erratic driving habits of the Greek, it is by the best mode of transport for those who wish to thoroughly explore. Road signs are written in Greek and repeated phonetically in English. Watch for the speed limit and stick to it - usually 50 to 110 KPH. Take note of these numbers: Police 100, Fire 166 and Ambulance 199. |
Piraeus Overview |
| With three natural harbours Piraeus has been the port of Athens since 493 BC, and today in the new millennium is still the busiest port in the world. The waterfront is crammed with shipping offices, travel agencies and places of business. Making no apologies for its functional operation Piraeus has no time to gloss over the grime or pretend it is more than the centre of a web of shipping lanes, with over 60 ships a day being despatched to various destinations around the world. |

Piraeus Essentials |
The Ferries – Leaving at different times throughout the day for the surrounding islands, tourists are ferried from Piraeus’s port to destinations that are more attractive.
The Archaeological Museum – This museum is worth visiting for lovers of ancient Greece and Apollo, with life-sized bronze statues created circa 520 BC dragged from the sea in 1959.
Hellenic Maritime Museum - From the submarines of WWII to ancient Athenian Triremes this museum traces the history of Greek navy’s history with models and relics.
Accommodation – Although Piraeus hotels geared to sailors rather than tourists, there are those catering for families, such as the Ionion Hotel close to the Metro.
Nightlife – There is not much of cultural entertainment in Piraeus, rather expect to relax in one of the taverns and listen to rembetika music.
