| Kavala is set on the eastern foothills of Mount Symvolo, and is the second largest city of Macedonia and the second port for northern Greece. It is located on the head of a beautiful wide bay, which has meant that it is called the Azure City. Kavala's city centre is filled with character, due to its 19th century harbour and old tobacco warehouses. |

Archaeological Museum of Kavala - This museum was built in the 1960s, and houses a wide range of collections. These collections include antiquities of ancient Neapolis; Philippi; Dikili-Tas; Amphipolis; and the surrounding area.
Municipal Folklore Museum - The museum is housed in a late 19th century neaclassical building. Its exhibition rooms are filled with traditional costumes; jewels; handicrafts; and a collection of works of art by local artists.
The Byzantine Citadel - This is one of the top attractions of Kavala, with amazing views of the town and surrounding area. At the citadel you can walk around and explore the the ramparts; towers; dungeon; and cistern.
Monastery of Icosifinissa - This huge monastery is located on Mount Pangeon, and is a religious and national historic centre. The monastery has 150 cells and many wide courtyards to discover. This is a sight not to be missed.
Beaches - Kavala is a popular summer holiday destination, with many beautiful white sand beaches and outstanding weather. Some of the most popular beaches of Kavala are: Perigiali; Rapsani; Kalamitsa; Batis; Tosca; and Palio. |
| Kavala Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Eleftheria (June) - This is one of the biggest events of the year in Kavala. It consists of a number of festivities in celebration of the anniversary of Kavala’s liberation from Turks.
Gynaecocratia (8 January) - This annual holiday is a day for women to relax and have fun, while the men keep house till dusk falls, when they can see their wifes again. As with all Greek holidays, lots of partying follows in the evening. |
