Kalamata Overview |
Kalamata is the capital and chief port of Messinia. The town is most famous for the Kalamatianos dance, is delicious black olives, honey basted figs and a sweet called pastelli which is covered in sesame seed.
Summer time in Kalamata is a definite highlight, as it is a time when many cultural events are held in the amphitheatre of the castle.
The waterfront is without a doubt, the best place to go, as it is littered with restaurants and cafes offering everything from fresh fish and chicken to cheese and sausages. |

Kalamata Essentials |
Benakeion Archaeological Museum of Kalamata - The museum is located in the centre of Kalamata. The building was erected in 1742 and was transformed into a museum in 1971. Items which are on display, range from a large selection of goods, these include sculptures, jewellery and pottery.
Railway Museum of the Municipality of Kalamata - The museum was opened in 1986 and consist of an area of about 200acres. Amoungst the displays, you will find interesting items such as a manually-operated crane which dates back to 1890.
Byzantine church - The church is located on the North side of Kalamata and is dedicated to the Virgin of Kalomata.
The Church of Agii Apostoli - This is the oldest church in the town and dates back to the 13th century. It is the place where the Greek Revolution was declared on the 23rd of March 1821.
13th Century Castle - The castle was built by Geoffrey de Villehardouin in the 13th century. It offers the most breath-taking views of the town and the ocean. |

1821 Memorial Parade - The parade is held annually on the 25th of March. It commemorates the Greek uprising against the Ottoman rule in 1821.
Kalamata Summer Festival - The festival is held every year and is celebrated by means of cultural events which consist of plays and concerts, held in the amphitheatre of the 13th century castle. |
